The first volume model of King Antiochos’s head
The INF receives the first volume model of King Antiochos’s head generated through 3-D laser scans at High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The 3-D object was created by successive layers of plastics. It is an accurate copy of the original statue. This is the first time that this technology has been applied in the field of archaeology. The INF’s intention is to make these models available to scholars upon their requests.

The Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science, her Excellency Mrs. Maria van der Hoeven, and the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkey, his Excellency Mr. Atilla Koç, have a meeting at the occasion of the opening of the exhibition "Istanbul. The City and the Sultan" in Amsterdam. Mrs. Maria van der Hoeven offers to sponsor the Nemrud Project with € 2.000.000.

First Field Work
The Middle East Technical University (METU), takes over the Nemrud monument from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in 2004. METU’s efforts start in 2006 by collecting data from the steles. The steles are pre-conservated and safely stored by the UvA in the temporary restoration laboratory constructed by ENKA.

S.I.S.
The University of Amsterdam and INF are proud to announce the first comprehensive digital S.I.S. (Site Information System) of the Nemrud monument. The S.I.S. is based on the 3-D laserscans of Callidus, the GPS (Global Positioning System) of the Technical University of Delft and the scientific work of the classical archaeologists of the University of Amsterdam. S.I.S. allowes for an accurate topographic mapping of the area as well as a precise locating and description of the artefacts.

The copy of the Lion Horoscope is presented for the first time to the Dutch public during the fair Life in Turkey. The consul-general, Mr. Ahmet Akif Oktay, unveils the famous artefact.

Lion Horoscope
The Gipsformerei der Staatlichen Museum in Berlin casted a copy of the undamaged Lion Horoscope as found by Karl Humann and Otto Puchstein in 1882 at Mt. Nemrud. The copy of the Lion Horoscope is ready for transport to Turkey.

The Dexiosis reliefs are safely stored in the restoration house without any damage.

Transportation of Dexiosis Reliefs
The mobile crane and the Mack truck provided by Enka are put into position. The fragile and partly delaminated reliefs are lifted, packed into a prefab steel frame, and placed at the heavy truck. Next they are transported one by one to the restoration house.

The Antiochos statue is carefully reassembled.

The Antiochos Statue
Every block of the Antiochos statue is carefully treated before it is replaced. The cracks are repaired and the gaps are filled. Some blocks are reinforced by use of fibre rods.

14th of July Celebration
At the 3nd annual celebration of the 14th of July, at sunset, the INF medal of honour is presented by the Dutch Embassy to Hayri Çulhacı, vice-president of Akbank T.A.Ş. and Mr. Ûnal Nakipler of the Enka Construction & Industry Co., Inc. in the presence of Mr. Ibrahim Halil Daşöz, Governor of Adiyaman.

Northside of the Statues at the East Terrace
The crumbled rock under the eagle/lion pedestal at the northside of the East Terrace is removed leaving a gap. Next the rock is cleaned and reinforced.

Temporary Road
A temporary gravel road is constructed from the restoration house to the West Terrace with the help of mules. Later on the mules are replaced by tractors.

The restoration house, donated by Enka, is constructed to conservate the Dexiosis reliefs of the West Terrace.

The Antiochos Statue Dismantled
The upper blocks of the Antiochos statue are taken down. The last block is put at the terrace just before the earthquake of 13 July.

The Antiochos statue at the East terrace is not stable. The upper blocks can tumble down any moment. Wooden braces are supporting the blocks.

The northside of the East Terrace is cleared of debris and fallen blocks.

Snow barrier
The temporary snow barrier is crippled by tons of snow and ice. The barrier served its purpose of protecting the stelae on the West Terrace and is removed.

Working-Session in Amsterdam
At a working session in Amsterdam with international experts, organized by the International Nemrud Foundation, the campaign for 2003 was discussed. There were specific consultations about restoration and conservation methods with Prof.Dr. Orhan Bingöl of the University of Ankara, Prof.Dr. Predrag Gavrilovic of University of Skopje, and conservation specialists Paolo Pagnin and Christoph Kronenwirth, as well as with Prof. Eric Moormann of the University of Nijmegen, Jaap Groot P.Eng., architect Maurice Crijns, Dr.Miguel-John Versluys and Prof. Herman Brijder of the Archaeological Centre of the University of Amsterdam.

Snow Protection
A temporary barrier is constructed by the chief engineer Jaap Groot to relief the snow pressure at the back of the stelae on the West Terrace.

Consolidation of the Statues
The bedrock under the statue of Herakles is consolidated under the supervision of Prof.Dr. Predrag Gavrilovic of the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology of Macedonia.

Re-location
Part of the emergency program is the re-location of unstable and endangered parts of the statues of the gods on the East Terrace. The first head is carefully hoisted by the Enka crane supervisor Zekai Şalcı and his co-worker Adnan Erdem, using specially developed strings and working at ultra low speed to avoid any damage.

The team of Prof.Dr. Onno van Nijf of the University of Groningen, making laserscans of the partly fallen stelae on the West Terrace. The participation of the Groningen team was made possible by a generous subsidy of the NV Nederlandse Gasunie, Groningen.

The German team of Dr. Bernd Fitzner determines the condition of the Apollo stele on the West Terrace. After laboratory testing, such as weathering tests, a catalogue will be produced stating the condition of the different stone artifacts.

At the Nemrud Conference-2 at Amsterdam, with more than thirty participants from ıtaly, Germany, U.S.A., Turkey, France, Macedonia and the Netherlands, the restoration and conservation methods are discussed. The Turkish government is represented by the governor of Adiyaman, Mr. Halil Işık.

3-D Laser of Callidus at work
The Callidus laser is shooting at a high speed laser beams at the statues, registering the reflections. The Callidus technology is unique in the world and allowes for very accurate 3-D images of the statues. For the first time this 3-D Laserscan is used for an archaeologic site.

Nemrud Conference-1 at the Nemrud 16-18 August
At a conference with international experts, organised by the World Monuments Fund at the Nemrud, the restoration and conservation methods are discussed. Besides the experts, are participating Mr. Fikret N. Üçcan, the Undersecretary, Dr. Alpay Pasinli, General Director of the Monuments & Museums Directorate and other representatives of the Ministry of Culture, together with Mr. Bülent Akarcalı, MP, and Prof.Dr. Herman Brijder of the University of Amsterdam.

GPS Team-2 at work
GPS Team-2 setting up a satellite transmitter with the help of the representative of the Ministry of Culture. The GPS, Global Positioning System, makes use of the satellites orbitting the earth. GPS allowes for an accurate topographic mapping of the area and locating of the artefacts.

Callidus
Callidus has decided to sponsor the Nemrud Project of INF. The latest top-technology will be made available, the 3-D Laser scanner, an improvement compared to the photogrammetry. The laser system enables an accurate virtual reconstruction of the statues of the Gods at Mt. Nemrud.

In memoriam Tomm Utecht
Tomm Utecht secretary of the INF, has passed away on Wednesday the 29th of March. Tomm Utecht conducted the geophysical research on Mt.Nemrud in 1989 and 1990. He was an excellent scientist and his life was dedicated to the Nemrud. The local people called him 'Nemrud Vale' (Nemrud gouvernor).

Protocol for the Nemrud signed
The protocol for the protection, restoration and excavation of the Nemrud, is signed by Mr. M. Istemihan Talay, the Minister of Culture, Mr. Tevfik Ketencioglu, President of KTV, Mr. Bülent Akarcali, President of the Turkish Democracy Foundation TDV, and Maurice Crijns, President of INF. KTV is in charge of controlling. TDV and INF are partners, responsible for the execution of the project.
